Health Policy Institute (HPI) invites you to participate
in the two Governance Briefings scheduled for Fall 2009, on October 30
and November 20.
Please note, the first briefing on October 20, Stellar
Healthcare Boards: Striving for Excellent Governance, is a half-day
event that features several distinguished speakers, including Richard de
Filippi, Anne Mullaney, Sean Patrick Murphy, Deborah Rice, Fredi
Shonkoff, and Mary Totten, and networking opportunities. On November 20,
James Bently‘s topic is Building and Keeping a Thriving Workforce: The
Board’s Role. See below for detailed talking points.

Friday, October 30, 8 AM - 1:00 PM— Heinz History
Center, Smallman Street Emerging Best Practices and Certification
Mary Totten, President Totten & Associates and
Consultant for the Center for Healthcare Governance. Totten & Associates
is a consulting firm specializing in health care governance, education
and communication. She is a speaker and consultant to hospitals and
health systems and other health-related organizations on issues of
quality, strategic planning and mission development, governing board
orientation, board self-evaluation and governance restructuring.
She will focus on these points:

Status of best practices in health care governance
·
Current examples of governance best practices
·
Governance certification’s affect on best practices
Competency-Based Governance
Richard de Filippi, Chair-elect, American Hospital
Association, and Director, Cambridge Health Alliance, chairs AHA’s
Long-Range Policy Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee.
He also is a trustee and former chairman of the Cambridge Health
Alliance board and has served on AHA’s Committee on Governance and
Regional Policy Board. He is managing partner of the Ariano
Partnership, a consulting group working with emerging technology-based
companies. Mr. de Filippi will address the following:

Define competency of individuals in the context of trustee behaviors

List the four domains of individual trustee competencies
·
Understand the uses of competencies in board performance improvement
New Governance Education Requirements
The Massachusetts Experience
Fredi Shonkoff, Senior Vice President, Corporate
Relations, Massachusetts Blue Cross Blue Shield, leads the
Corporate Relations Division. She manages corporate governance and
serves as Corporate Secretary for the company’s Board of Directors.
Fredi sets the community strategy for the organization, directs
charitable giving, volunteer effort and supplier diversity program and
is liaison to the BCBSMA Foundation, which she helped create. Ms.
Shonkoff will focus on:

Trustees’ quality and safety governance education
·
BCBSMA incentive portion of hospital contracts
·
MA hospital network— quality & safety goals
The New Jersey Experience
Sean Patrick Murphy is Senior Vice President and
General Counsel, and Assistant Secretary to Solaris Health System, a
multi-hospital integrated delivery system in Edison, New Jersey.
Mr. Murphy’s professional background is combination of health care
administration and law. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Murphy
was a hospital administrator, and served as Captain in the U.S. Medical
Service Corps. Mr. Murphy will talk about:

New Jersey: An anomaly or a vision of things to come

Future trends in hospital and health system governance
Commentators
Anne D. Mullaney, Trustee, Jefferson Regional Medical
Center and Partner, Thorp Reed & Armstrong. Ms. Mullaney also
serves as general counsel to hospitals and healthcare providers and as
special counsel to healthcare clients on a variety of issues.
Deborah Rice, Executive Vice President, Health
Services, Highmark, provides senior leadership and strategic direction
for Highmark’s core health insurance business including sales and
marketing activities and provider activities.

Building and Keeping a Thriving Workforce: The Board’s
Role
As baby-boomer employees begin to retire from
full-time work, hospitals and healthcare systems will be faced with a
severe shortage of essential capabilities. Monitoring and
responding to these workforce shifts are fiduciary responsibilities of
boards.
